Wooden Care 101: Do’s & Don’ts

Wooden products are eternally chic. They add character and warmth to any space but handling them carefully is necessary to preserve their beauty. Your woodenware will not only last a long time but will also age gracefully and gain charm with time if you follow some good habits.

Here’s a handy Do’s and Don’ts guide for wooden care.

Do’s

1.Dust regularly (but gently).

Regular wiping with a microfiber cloth keeps dust from getting into the grain. Regular cleaning helps maintain the finish and keeps the wood polished and fresh-looking.

2. Place coasters and mats on tables.

Drying and heat can cause rings or stains that never fully go away. Coasters, trivets, and mats act as small shields, protecting the surface for years to come.

3. Occasional polish.

Pamper them with beeswax or food oil to restore shine without smothering the wood. A thin polish every one or two years is usually sufficient to keep it glowing.

5. Clean spills immediately.

Wood absorbs fluids quickly. Dab spills gently and dry the surface immediately to avoid stains and long-lasting damage.

6. Store them dry

Do not soak in water for long and make sure to dry them thoroughly with a soft towel before storing.

Don’ts

1.     Avoid using harsh cleaners.

Bleach, ammonia, or alcohol sprays damage finishes and textures. Always opt for wood-specific cleaners to protect surfaces. You can also rub a lemon to fight off any odors.

2.     Don’t drag heavy things.

Dragging furniture or decor across wooden floors leaves scratches and marks. Lift and place items gently to safeguard the finish.

3.     Don’t leave it in direct sunlight.

Prolonged sunlight exposure can cause fading, cracking, and discoloration. Protect your woodenware using curtains or blinds.

4.     Don’t neglect small cracks.

Tiny cracks may look harmless but worsen over time. Early repairs help preserve both aesthetics and durability.

5.     Don’t store in humid places.

Dampness leads to warping, swelling, and mold growth. Always keep wooden items in dry, well-ventilated areas.

6.     Don’t over-wax.

Excess wax makes wood sticky and attracts dust. A light waxing once in 4-5 months is more than enough.

Bonus Tips

  • Restyle or rotate wooden items seasonally to even out wear and sunlight.
  • For quick touch-ups, use an eco-friendly polish made with olive oil and lemon.
  • Keep surfaces clutter-free so the natural beauty of wood can shine.
